Alba Logistics
Warehouse Design and Consultancy

About Us

Background

Alba Logistics is a specialist business consultancy focusing on warehouse strategy, design and operation and was founded in 2005 by Patrick Daly. We are based in Dublin, Ireland and operate internationally from this base.

Since 2005, we have completed consultancy assignments in Ireland, United Kingdom, Malta, Puerto Rico and China. Our clients include companies in the manufacturing, distribution and logistics services sectors.

The realisation that many companies, both multinationals and local firms alike, were overlooking many fundamental tenets of good warehouse design and operation was the spark that ignited the desire to do something concrete to correct this.

In particular many businesses were overlooking the importance of the dimensions, weights and physical characteristics of their stock profile when planning and projecting warehouse facilities and equipment.

Additionally, many were developing their logistics facilities, to our way of thinking, the wrong way around. That is, they tended focus on the size, shape and location of the warehouse building itself rather than on what they needed to be able to do inside and around the building in order to support their business objectives.

In our opinion, you need to look at your business needs first, carry out the requisite hard data analysis and concept design options based on these needs and only then look at what building envelope can be put around the operation.

To do otherwise, invariable leads to building-in unnecessary constraints and compromises that stay with the operation for its entire lifetime.

We have developed particular expertise in the pharmaceutical and food sectors at both the manufacturing and distribution levels and we have extensive experience in high productivity distribution centre design for fast moving consumer goods in both conventional and automated order picking regimes.

Business Philosophy

We view our role as independent consultants and our purpose in business is to improve the condition of our clients through our work.

One of the unique features of our business is that we do not charge per diem rates based on arbitrary “deliverables” but rather we make a value proposition to our clients with clearly articulated objectives, measures of success and a quantification of value.

This gives us the flexibility to respond to changing circumstances and evolving knowledge to do what needs to be done to help clients reach their objectives and improve their condition.

“Alba Logistics have worked with PepsiCo at several manufacturing site locations around the world. Working closely with Alba, in each case we achieved warehouse solutions that are practical, implementable and guaranteed to achieve productivity. Furthermore, Alba deserve the credit for showing their flexibility to accommodate the changes and modifications to plans during the project work.”

Aims and Mission

It is our conviction that the warehouse is a crucially important strategic pillar within the wider supply chain function.

Therefore, our aims are to work with clients to develop and implement effective warehousing strategies that support their business objectives as well as enabling them to develop warehouse designs and operational procedures that are effective and productive within these strategies.

The desire to help clients avoid the basic errors in warehouse design and operation as a first step and then to support them to progress from there to plan and implement high productivity physical logistics operations that are innovative on the one hand while remaining both effective and productive on the other is the driving force and mission of Alba Logistics.

This mission is fulfilled through providing both consultancy services and training seminars.

    • SME Vulnerability in the Supply Chain

      September 13th, 2009

Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), businesses with less than 500 employees, face a special set of challenges by virtue of the position of relative weakness they occupy within supply chains.

This vulnerability comes about either by dint of the fact that SMEs find themselves as suppliers to dominant lead companies such as large retail chains and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), or by dint of the fact that they are in competition with such lead companies.

Consequently, an issue of premier importance to SMEs is the management of the relationships that they maintain with these customers. These relationships are pivotal to the ability of SMEs to maintain their supplier status.

      The Story of Warehousing

From its origins in the days of ancient Egypt and Babylonia through to our own times, the story of warehousing has been an unending adventure. From ancient granary store to lynchpin of today’s global supply chains, the modern warehouse has become a sophisticated, high-tech work centre and a cornerstone of competitive advantage.

Today, the rate of change in the practice of warehousing is accelerating and the gap between the best performers and the rest is widening. This is because these best performers realise that the latest technologies and best practices can make major contributions to profitability, market share and environmental responsibility.
